Let’s shift our focus from the confines of our mind to the wisdom housed within our bodies. It's crucial to recognize that our body is not merely a vessel; it carries profound wisdom, and our mind and body are intricately intertwined.
For the most part of my life, I really didn’t pay too much attention to my body. Of course I know it’s there. I noticed it when I was sick, or injured, or generally unwell. I know I wanted to keep in good shape. But that’s about it. In other words, I never translated the messages my body sent me via various signals. I certainly didn’t know our body carries tremendous wisdom and that we actually “think” with our body.
Too often, we prioritize the chatter of our minds over the subtle whispers of our bodies. When our body signals exhaustion, urging us to rest, we override it with another scroll through social media or an extra glass of wine. Conversely, in moments of profound emotional turmoil, our bodies tighten with tension, begging for a break, yet we pressure ourselves to carry on, burying our feelings beneath a mountain of work or distractions. These are manifestations of disembodiment, instances where we disconnect from our physical selves, damaging the vital connection between mind and body.
But our mind and body are not adversaries; they are allies in our quest for holistic well-being. Our thoughts influence our emotions, and our emotions, in turn, shape our thoughts. Returning to our bodies grants us access to a profound superpower — somatic intelligence. By consciously attuning ourselves to the messages encoded in our physical sensations, we unlock the potential to cultivate a life brimming with joy and fulfillment.
There are a lot of somatic techniques out there that can deepen our connection with our bodies, but in this video, I wanted to start with a simple yet powerful practice: engaging our senses during our daily movements. Now, take a moment to pause and ask yourself:
What are you hearing now? Tune in to the sounds around you — the gentle hum of conversation, the distant rumble of traffic. What else? Can you discern the rhythm of your own breath?
What are you seeing? You are reading this article obviously. 😊 What else? Do you notice the colors of the clothes you are wearing? What about a stranger walking by? Is she or he wearing glasses? Or, what’s the texture of the table or desk in front of you?
What are you feeling with your touch? Try this – run your fingers lightly across the skin of your face. What sensations are you noticing? Perhaps close your eyes to heighten your awareness.
What are you smelling? Inhale deeply, what is it in the air? your freshly brewed coffee? the flowers in your room? Or the earthy fragrance of rain?
What are you tasting? When you eat, eat slowly, and take your time to savor each flavor that graces your palate.
Fully immerse yourself in all these senses daily with boundless compassion and love, honoring the sacred union of your mind and your body. Remember, your body is a sanctuary of wisdom — a conduit through which you can forge a deeper connection with yourself and the world around you.
As we continue to develop our somatic awareness and sensory awareness, we will be able to start activating our somatic intelligence, learn how to embody our true self through somatic healing and how to think with our body, honoring the innate wisdom that resides within each of us.
Remember, your body matters, and your body always knows. I hope you continue to honor your body and treat it with love and compassion.
